I really hate the people who go "You hate these characteristics in women but you love them in men." Hi, yeah, there is sexism, but there's also different stereotypes and cliches for men and women. Something that's cliched and painful for a female character can be completely novel and interesting in a male character.

W0rd.

Another effect it can have is to point up how idiotic some conventions are. Like putting a man in the damsel in distress mode, for example - they did this in one fandom I was in. If it had been a female character I would've rolled my eyes and ignored it (probably drifting out of the fandom later on), but in a male it inspired frothing rage at how useless he was while the heroine was going out and risking her life.

sadly, there are fans of the 'damsel in distress' stereotype. it's one of the reason it keeps getting written.

*shrug* what can you do but just move right along.

Late, but IAWTC.

I used to be so into the "UGH HORRIBLE DOUBLE STANDARDS" way of thinking, but now I have to admit... while I don't really like that this is the case, there is more to it than that.
