Are those places still hives SJW wankery?

Yes. But fun to read as long as you stay out of the wankery.

I used to wear a beautiful pentagram necklace I bought at the Renaissance Fest way back when while at this retail job, but I made sure to hide it under my apron and shirt because I live in the deep South and people tend to fear what they don't understand here.

I was helping a customer load up some mulch when my necklace slipped over my apron, he caught a glimpse of it, and started ranting and raving to me about hating God, myself, my job, the world, yadda yadda. I was actually really taken aback by the sudden outburst, and he promised me on his way out that he'd be speaking to my manager about me.

My manager did approach me at the end of my shift, but it was only to assure me that he had done his best to calm the customer and wasn't taking his complaints to heart. He actually thought my necklace was the Star of David (he probably never got more than a second's look at it) and firmly defended my right to wear that kind of thing if I wanted to, shockly enough! I gained a new kind of respect for him after that.

Arrgh, how i hate that. I've worn a pentagram for years (still do) and when the idiots in my state ranted at me on my job, and told me they would 'pray for me' i would just brightly smile and say 'I'll do a spell for you!!'

How i hate people like that.

oh, crap. I have a bracelet with a pentagram and I had to explain to my friend's kid how it wasn't a devil worship symbol. Thank fuck she believed me.

Not the worst, but I work in a store that's near a store that closed, and people keep coming in to complain that the store closed. It probably closed six years ago now, but I'm tempted to, one of these days, say in a dark voice: "There must be some mistake. Everyone who worked in that store died in a gas leak fifty years ago."

I used to work in a bookstore that was across the street from a bank that closed. A customer came in demanding to know why the bank had closed, as if I'd know that.

As a "representative": When I worked as a dispatcher a guy will call once a week to complain about the church bells waking him up at 6am. He'd get so irate about it. D: And it wasn't like I could do anything about it.

As a customer: This one wasn't bad so much as uncomfortable. My roommate (I hated) was on line trying to get something on her laptop fixed. She had to restart her computer and she just hands me the phone and runs downstairs. And...didn't come back for like 15 minutes. And I didn't know the password for her laptop so I could not even work on the problem with the customer service guy. We literally talked about the weather. I was livid.

I once had an Internet connection problem where the representatives kept asking both me and my roommate for relevant information. My roommate only spoke passable English, and I hardly speak any Spanish, so we got shuffled back and forth between the Spanish-speaking and English-speaking representatives. I have no memory of how we finally resolved it.

You turned the computer off and back on again.

I have speech issues, which makes it a bit hard for me to be articulate. One "nice lady" handled this by hanging up on me, and when I called back, said it was because "I couldn't understand you."

I was too amused by her audacity to be that blunt to take offense, but WTF.

sucky service on my part. One time I walked to a tourist spot for an hour - long story - only to find out it was under construction. I flipped out on the woman who worked there, because I was achy and tired and miserable. Way to prove that all Americans are rude. Mostly, though, I feel bad that I went ballistic on her for something she couldn't control. :( (Still, even though this happened YEARS ago.)

Hey, at least you felt bad, and know not to do it again. Some people literally do not give a shit.

I worked in telephone sales for about five years and customer service for about a year and a half. I have no fun stories from sales (except one time when a girl in our office had a guy who wanted her number because her voice sounded so amazing that he wanted to date her) sales was tame and easy and the most you ever got was someone telling you not to call them back.

Customer service was hellish. I got people calling in mad about bills constantly. Other people would get death threats, girls would get creeps calling in asking if they were wearing panties, people would call and threaten to find our call center and bomb it... Luckily the place I worked didn't require you to stay on the phone in those situations, but some places do.

Probably the worst thing I ever got was just a routine call, but the lady on the other line didn't let me even finish the welcome script, she just started screaming obscenities into the phone full volume. She sounded like she was sitting on a broken glass dildo which was on fire and covered with fire ants. That was how mad she was. I hung up immediately, and discovered her account was covered in notes describing how she would do this routinely. She had called four times already that day to do this very thing.

There was nothing we could do about it either. It was against the law to block her from calling customer service, but that lady needed to be arrested and but into psychiatric care like, years ago.

Did she call and rant just to be able to do so, or did she actually have a problem? o_O

Not Always Right has hilarious and awful customer stories.

My most recent customer service story was at Wal-Mart. I walked up to the express lane with about five items. There was no one in line. I put my items on the belt. The cashier, who was talking to another cashier standing next to her, completely ignored me. Neither of them looked at me. I looked up to make sure the light was on and the register wasn't closed. So I just kept standing there, and both cashiers either talked to themselves in low voices or kept looking off into the distance like they were waiting for someone. Finally, I said, "Is there a problem?" and one girl said, "Yeah, you probably want to go to a different lane." No shit. You should have told me there was a problem with your machine the second I started putting my stuff on the belt.

I recommend these to everybody: http://notalwaysright.com/ and http://notalwaysworking.com/.

Uh, for me - I have had some bad customers and bad service experiences, but the ones that tend to stick in my mind are the dumb/funny ones. Like the time I accidentally greeted someone at a drive-thru with the name of the restaurant I used to work at. Or the time someone asked me how bit a third-pound hamburger was. :P

I was the customer in this one. I was in the airport after just having spent about 26 hours in transit for an international flight. Thanks to some bad planning on my part, I'd gotten about 15 hours of sleep over a three day period and I was totally exhausted. I was second in line for coffee when the lady at the till forgot her debit card in the machine. Not wanting her to lose it, I attempted to say, "Ma'am, you forgot your debit card." Due to my exhaustion, it came out closer to, "Grrrarghphfgmlgrnnnmerrdghai!" The lady looked at me fearfully and scooted down the counter, while the man before me just watched me warily, as if waiting for an attack. The poor girl at the counter was trying, very kindly and in a tone normally used on other people's children when they're throwing a tantrum, to tell me that I had to wait my turn like everyone else, and that the nice gentleman before me got to order first. I was getting more and more frustrated, but kept trying to get my message across while gesturing wildly at the debit machine. I finally managed to get, "Card," out coherently enough that the man understood.

He immediately went, "Oh! You left your debit card in the machine, ma'am!" with a big, friendly smile.

"*Debit* card, THANK you! That's the word I was looking for!" I said, smiling back at him. I apologized to the cashier, too, when it was my turn to order, and explained that I was just so tired and couldn't seem to get my words to work.

as a customer:

Went to a place to buy lipstick. I am a very pale person, and I wanted something startlingly red for contrast. So I find the perfect thing and try to buy it.

But the lady at the checkout just looked at me and said, "You know, dear, we offer free make-up consultation," so, I say, "no thank you, I'll just take the lipstick" and then she says, "no, you're too pale for this shade. you need a pink." I had no idea how to really respond to that, so I just said, "that's the one I want, though" and try to pay for it. She kept insisting it was "wrong", though, and that she'd help me pick something "appropriate" for my skin tone, and told me to wait. So I dropped exact change for the damn thing on the counter, took what I wanted and left while her back was turned. On my way out the door I heard her complain to another person that worked there that "How could you let her go!? She's going to look like a whore!!"

Still my favourite lipstick, though.

I hope you called back and reported her.

Also good on you, I love how you handled that. :)
