Well, I listed the most common reasons for their existence in Homestuck's fandom. Not sure about other fandoms.

I guess I get maybe not watching a show if it's pretty long and you're only in it for one character by a favorite actor. I've done that for BBC's Robin Hood re: Richard Armitage. But I also only really stuck to reading the occasional fanfic and watching the occasional fanvid. Never contributed anything myself, because yeah. I didn't know enough about the canon in question.
