Re: Obscure Character
Now if you way you're an expert on fantasy, or you're familiar with it's most important works, and you haven't read the above authors - then yeah, that'd be kinda dumb.
Sorry, this just smacks of "you're not a REAL fan of ____ unless you've read/watched/played ____!" which bugs me and strikes me as very elitist. And by extension, I feel like it would discourage people from getting more into it because they'd feel like they're just trying to prove themselves to a bunch of jerks.
Re: Obscure Character
And I guess I should clarify, he went on and on about how he loved fantasy and reading fantasy and about how all his friends were shallow because they didn't like to read like he did, etc, and then he asked me who my favorite author was. I said Terry Pratchett. He hadn't heard of him. I said he wrote Discworld. He hadn't heard of that either.
So it wasn't just an author thing. It was an author + actual product thing. I just shortened it a bit, since it was just an internet comment. Plus it came straight on the tailback of a brag + putdown of his non-reading friends, so... yeah. Influencing factors.
And I also wasn't expected him to have read anything of his. It was the fact that he'd claimed to have read so much of the genre and hadn't even heard of the guy that threw me a little.
In the end, I guess it's a bit elitist, but I still think there's a strong difference between "you're not a REAL fan of ____ unless you've read/watched/played ____!" and "you're not a REAL fan of ____ if you claim you've read all this stuff and are better than your friends and haven't heard of ______!"
That's why I brought up movie composers and John Williams. And Batman and Two Face.
If someone saw just the first two Burton Batman films and nothing else, then yeah, they could say they loved Batman and have no idea who Two Face is. And there'd be nothing wrong with loving it/their status as a Batman fan. But when you start getting into discussions about Batman and bragging about said love/knowledge of Batman, saying you're more cultured because of Batman... well yeah.
