It is more that I USED to love them and met many people through mutual fannishness of characters I now hate. It's very awkward.

Ah, I see. I still think honesty is the way to go here. It doesn't have to be a big deal. (As long as you're not dealing with people who run shrines for characters, that is. If that's the case, continue to prevaricate.)
