28. It's not WoW's fault if your friends are addicted to the game. Plenty of people play it and are not addicted. I personally have never met anyone who's life was destroyed by WoW.

Like with any addict an intervention is needed. You can't just throw up your hands in defeat and blame the game. If your friends were alcoholics would you just give up and blame all liquor for their addiction or would you try to help them?

Where in my secret did I suggest that I 'threw up my hands' at them? And where in my secret did I suggest that everyone who plays WoW is addicted to it? I was pointing out the fact that it is a game to which people can become addicted, and that people who have become addicted to WoW have ruined their lives as a result. If you and your friends drink, but always in moderation, that does not vicariously mean that alcoholics do not exist.

I'd say by starting your secret in big bold letters "This game ruins lives"

Yes, in your experience the game have proven to be a negative thing, but you're really not telling anyone anything new. This game can be addictive. A lot of games can be addictive. We're aware.

It's not like every time someone does something stupid and the investigators find out they played "X popular game" it's not plastered all over the news. Believe me, we KNOW it can be addicting, but not everyone is addicted, and it's annoying to be saddled with the image of being a drop out or a jobless bum just because some friends of yours made some questionable decisions.

The game is not a cause of addiction, it's a vice for addiction. Obviously they find something more rewarding about playing the game than in real life. That's why an intervention is needed. There's probably something more going on in the person's life that they turn to games to fill the void.

Firstly, who the hell said that you had to tell anyone anything new in F!S. As far as I can see, it's a community for people to admit to things they're ashamed of, or gripe about things they've had enough of. The OP has clearly had enough of seeing people lose themselves to the game. She said the game ruins lives, and--hey, guess what!--it's TRUE! WoW has ruined lives. Alcoholism has ruined lives. Gambling and drugs and television soap operas have ruined lives. Is it the game's fault? No. But WoW is a very addictive game, and combined with an addictive personality, the results can be disastrous.

Everyone knows that it's addicting and everyone in geekdom is dead tired of seeing video games blamed for everything from ADHD to school shootings. But it doesn't change the fact that, in this person's experience, people have had their lives ruined, and their chief form of crack was WoW.

S/He is complaining about having seen that. They're ranting, getting it off their chest here. That doesn't mean they're not doing something about it. Or maybe it's something that has already happened, and they're mad at the aftermath. "THIS GAME RUINS LIVES" is not a generalization claiming that everyone who plays the game is a moron who sits in their basement. It is a simple fact from personal observation that the game has ruined the lives of people the OP was acquainted with.
You don't have to make a secret to tell people something they didn't already know. You make a secret because there's something you want to say.

Yes, yes, people need to take responsibility. But as Eddie Izzard said, "They say guns don't kill people; people kill people. But I think the guns help."

It's sort of incredible, how readily you can blame me for the conclusions that you've leap to based on my secret. Aren't you the only one who's responsible for the formation of your opinion and conclusions?

And again, WHEN did I say that WoW is the cause of addiction? People can become addicted TO WoW, but like I've said... booze or crack just sitting on a counter top does not create addiction. It is a person with an addictive personality using these things and BECOMING addicted that makes booze and crack something that people get addicted to.

And furthermore: If you play the game and are not the addict, it's the same as drinking alcohol in a social setting but not being a drunk. You can use it responsibly and be a good person, but still, alcoholics exist. You may not BE one, but they definitely exist.
