Thanks for the link. I think this both saddens me and validates the OP's point.

Yay for video game addiction, eh?

As for the point about hatred of alcohol, it's unfair to imply that no friends hate alcohol, because some do. However, it's also unfair to tonally imply that everyone hates it as well. (That's just the vibe I got from your response, appologies if I'm way off base) Some do, some don't. Personally, I think it's better to set the hatred aside and help the people that need it most. (And maybe see a therapist about any psychological revulsion that you have. Dislike is one thing, but pure, unadulterated hatred? That at least warrants a looking into. The reasons are understandable, but still, a neck up check up wouldn't hurt.)

Well, I'm not seeing how my response to the effect that somewhere somehow there is possibly at least one person who hates alcohol for what their loved ones have gone through can imply, tonally or otherwise, that this is the case for everyone. But there it is. And again, your personal philosophy, though good and noble, doesn't work for everyone, and really I don't think that people who claim to dislike liquor, WoW, and whatnot actually don't make efforts to help the afflicted. We do both, kind of a "help the sinner, hate the sin" thing; in most cases, the feeling of distaste is a consequence of bigger things anyway. Someone like, say, me - well, I'm not saying I hate WoW exactly, but I'm not enlisting to be its next biggest fan either if you catch my drift.

Your suggestion is, uh, extremely helpful, but I'm afraid my therapist has enough to be going on with on a daily basis, and needn't add "raging hypocrisy" to her case files should I suddenly announce a revulsion for alcohol. I do know people who feel this way though, and after what they've been through? They're entitled to hate at least a little bit, if you don't mind me saying. I'm not going to be the one to preach love and forgiveness about shit I can't even claim to understand.

Actually, that "suggestion" was not directed specifically at you. It was more of a general population you. A "If you hear hear hooves, don't assume it's zebra if you live in Maine" kind of thing. And I'm not saying that a little hatred or dislike is mentally unhealthy, it's not. What I'm saying is that too much can be a sign of bad things and getting help early is better than waiting until things blow up.

The 'help the sinner, hate the sin' mentallity is not one I generally find myself following. I'll help the "sinner" to the best of my ability, but my personal views on the "sin" itself are based singularily on my personal reactions to it, not how it has affected other people or me by proxy.

For example, I know what it's like to grow up in a family where one adult drinks far more than is healthy, and some of the negative effects (fights and whatnot) have directly involved me. Does that mean I hate beer? No. The reason I don't like it is because it's bitter tasting and generally unappealing to me. Wine, on the other hand, I like. Same thing for WoW. I gave up playing for months on end while my best friend worked on stopping the addiction before it could get a firm hold. Do I hate WoW for making my friend skip meals, sleep, and slack off at work? No, not in the slightest. I love the game. It amuses me to no end and helps me vent the frustrations of the day in a safe, healthy manner. (Better to set pixels afire than real people, right? Right.)

I don't know, maybe I'm just a wierd one.
