Pairings where the relationship in canon seems clearly parent/child always kind of gross me out. I feel the same way about Skye/Coulson that I do about Buffy/Giles.

I remember being shocked the first time I heard about Buffy/Giles because when I was first watching the show I wasn't really in fandom and the thought of them together wouldn't even occur to me.

I know for some people that's their kink but when a relationship comes off as too familial I just can't ship them (this is also why I can't ship FitzSimmons, no matter how they show portrays them they still come off as brother and sister to me.)

Close friendships don't ping the same ick factor for me that the power dynamics of a mentor/mentee sort of relationship does. To me, friendships can change really easily, so I don't really see them as brother/sister (and in fact, antagonistic relationships seem more sibling like to me since that's how I relate to my sibling).

A perfect comparison since - and I say this as a fan of the show - the original cast is almost entirely re-imagined BTVS characters.

Well, but in somewhat different roles. I mean, maybe Coulson is a bit Giles but he's the one in charge and the main character. I can see May as Buffy a bit, maybe an older more mature Buffy who has been through a lot more and is more damaged as a result. I don't really see Fitz and Simmons as Xander and WIllow, though. Especially given their dynamic and the lack of a dynamic with May. And who is Skye? And Ward isn't Angel at all.

Well, re-imagined by definition means somewhat different roles. I mean, they couldn't make it TOO obvious that they were just recycling previous Whedon ideas. But Skye is clearly Buffy AKA the "Chosen One" who is thrust into a new and dangerous world and around whom everything revolves (Haha! Coulson is the main character? Are we watching the same show? I WISH Coulson was the main character). And Ward, the cardboard love interest who (surprise!) turns bad? He certainly is Angel. Geeky best friends, one of whom has a crush on ~*the star*~ before they start playing at will-they-won't-they with each other? Certainly sounds like a bullet point description of Xander and Willow to me.

The details and dynamics are changed, and at least they've developed them in different directions, but especially at the beginning of the show, they were very much "inspired by" Buffy characters. May is the only one that seems somewhat original.

Anyway, totally off-topic. Shipping them weirds me out too. Thank God they will clearly never become canon.

This is really stretching it. Skye isn't the Chosen One and lots of people have powers, including both her parents. Ward was always evil and was a (fake-out) love interest for May, not Skye. Neither Fitz nor Simmons had a crush on Skye. Coulson is similar to Giles only in that he's an older guy.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Ward was definitely a fake out love interest for Skye. That's why they started the season with him repeatedly saying "I would never lie to you" and stuff like that to her. True, he slept with May first, but the tension between him and Skye was definitely always there.
As for Fitz, he just seems to have a crush on everybody to me. Skye included.

Yeah, I was never able to ship Giles with any of the scoobies in the show.

Anya, on the other hand....

I don't mind Anya/Giles, though I mostly love her with Xander. But mostly I just don't ship Giles. He reminds me so much of my dad that he was always just the father figure character for me. I wanted him to be my dad, but I couldn't ship him with anyone other than Jenny really, and even then I don't want to read the sex.

The sex clearly was good. Or she would have changed her mind about staying afterwards.

You and me both! Giles and Anya were great together. Xander/Anya worked for me for a while but I couldn't get behind it after his reaction to her sleeping with Spike. You left her at the alter, dude. You don't get a say in who she sleeps with anymore. And it bothered me that Xander and Andrew were the only ones who had a reaction to what happens to Anya in the series finale. I wish we would've seen more of a reaction from Giles. Not even from a shipping POV but just because next to Xander, he was the closest to Anya.
