Yeah I never understood the need to make up a gender neutral pronoun when they/them is ALREADY gender neutral and also grammatically acceptable.

I mean, call yourself whatever you want, go wild, but it seems like... making up a new word for fridge when fridge already exists.

Until you are talking about two or more people who go by "they" and you have to specify that you mean they as in both of them or they as in just that one person. It reaches a point where it's easier to just not use any pronouns. Or never share anecdotes about those friends.
