No, he wasn't just blunt. He was trying to say it as mean as possible to get back at them for saying mean things about his friend behind his friend's back.

Nope, you're misrepresenting him. His terse replies and neutral expression don't signal him going out of his way to be mean. He isn't even giving away that their trash-talking Takeo is the reason why he doesn't like them. The only thing that makes him seem harsh is the framing from Takeo's POV, and Takeo is insensible to people's faults.
