I don't know, I find that in general (and with younger people) people don't talk behind someone's back to spare the person's feelings being hurt, but because they know what they're saying is shitty and they don't want to get in trouble.

And doesn't this scene happen while they're like in grade school? Kids that age are not exactly known for their maturity and you can't really expect them to.
