I wrote a Star Trek filk-ish thing? The poem equivalent of a filk?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote a Star Trek filk, except it's not for a song, it's for a poem. Basically, it's a 23rd-24th century version of "Sea Fever" by John Masefield. I didn't want to post it to my journal or fic profile so I thought I would show you guys to see what you think of it.

I must go out to space again
To the sea behind the sky
And all I ask is a silver ship
And a star to steer her by.

And the drive's thrum and the core's throb
And the bridge-lights' choir
And the nimble surf on the burning tides
Of a thousand wells of fire.

I must go out to space again
For the call of the last frontier
Is a dreamer's call, a siren's call
To bewitch the curious ear

And all I ask is the warped space
With the star-tails streaming.
And the blue veils and the red lace
Of the gas-clouds gleaming.

I must go out to space again
Where none have laid their eyes
To see the backs of the Pleiades
In an alien planet's skies

And all I ask is a soft black sea
With foam of starlight pale
And the wild cry in the velvet hush
Of a friendly stranger's hail.

I like it! Man, I wish filk songs/CDs were still a thing; this seems like something that would be cool as a spoken word track on a filk song CD.

You going to post it anywhere else? :o

I have heard some great Star Trek filks too, from Leslie Fish etc! I suppose it wouldn't sound good spoken aloud unless I had a really good speaker to do it though.

I don't know if I'll post it. Maybe on AO3.

Yeah! Good speakers are great; one of my fav memories is this guy telling us the poem of the Highwayman. It was wonderful.

If you do, could you link it? Or at least link me? :o

I liked these lines:
And all I ask is a soft black sea
With foam of starlight pale
Good visuals.

Wonderful. Preserves the spirit of John Masefield's poem, but is still original.
