He doesn't have to like them, but he should have told them something like "Sorry, but I'm not interested." It takes hardly more effort to say and isn't deliberately mean.

Telling someone you don't like them isn't what I'd call mean, especially if there's an actual reason you don't like them, such as them being rude or hurtful about someone you cared about in your hearing. Why shouldn't he tell them he doesn't like them? It sounds like they didn't exactly earn being liked, and then came up to him asking him to not just like but love them. I'd be as blunt as possible in response to that too, and if that's all he said, if that was as hurtful as he got about it, then I really don't understand your problem with it. They were rude first, and got a blunt response in return.

did you miss the part where the girls purposefully used takeo to get closer to suna? suna's a sharp kid and he picked on that quick. why would he just as fake to those who say mean things about his friend?
