He's a primary school kid at the time; hence the little smock thing he and the other kids are wearing. What he says and the way he says it, are completely understandable, especially within the context of the story, and generally within the context of primary school-aged kids in general. Nor does the show present this as either particularly admirable or particularly detestable action on his part.
