Windows 10

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
So, I now have a little notification telling me to reserve my copy of Windows 10 (which will be free). Is there any benefit of Windows 10 over 7?

I see that updates will be automatic and you can't turn them off. Which sucks balls if an update comes out that is buggy (I tend to wait a couple weeks before updating).

Also, I hated Windows 8 and this looks like Windows 8 (what happened to Windows 9?).

Plus Windows 10 looks like it will have built in ads and such. Just not looking all that great.

The only real benefit is that it's the "last OS." There will never be another Windows. Any future builds will be free.

But I dunno, 7 works pretty nicely. I don't think I want to get rid of it. Of course, eventually we'll all have to, because they'll stop support for it. But until then...

I noticed that too! I'm sort of surprised it's free, but that's neat.

If usage wasn't an issue for me I would probably give it a go, but since it is I'll most likely wait and see. I'm still getting used to windows 8, I don't know about a newer version.

I'm using the beta version of Windows 10 right now and personally I think it's fantastic. Combines the best parts of Windows 7 and Windows 8, with a few new features that are pretty great. It does look like Windows 8, aesthetically, but takes away a lot of the things that were stupid (like the Charms bar, and full-screen apps - modern apps can be windowed now). They also brought back the Start menu (although, interestingly, it can be displayed in full screen if you choose).

I especially love a new feature which allows you to create multiple desktops/workspaces with different windows running in each. Mac OSX has something similar, if you're familiar with it, and it was always one of my favorite parts of that OS.

The new browser has promise but I hope it has a bit more polish by the time it's released, the version I'm currently using is really buggy.

[/Windows geek, sorry!]

What about the supposed subscription to get updates? Is that still on the table? Cause that is seriously the only thing that will make me not move to it.

Wait for the first Service Pack. Always wait for the first Service Pack.
