35. aljd I agree. When someone posted a secret a while ago about this, I thought there would be a few more replies on the "using someone's art without their permission is kinda not cool" side and was shocked that nearly every response was exactly the kind of immaturity that you described. wtf

I think it would bother me less if the Japanese weren't so very clear, most of the time, about disliking their fanart being used that way. :/ They go out of their way to make sure English-speaking fandom knows they want to be asked first if you're going to do stuff with their art. And yet so much of English-speaking fandom is all, "Well once they put their fanart on the internets, they have no say in what happens to it!" Not technically, no, but isn't it common courtesy to respect their wishes?

But fandom's response to this seems to be one huge entitlement complex of "I WANT to make fanart icons, so I'm going to IGNORE the way the artist feels! My wants are more important!" And that kind of self-centeredness seriously turns me off the idea of fanart icons entirely. =_=
