Totally. The battle system might not be for some people, for example. I know I didn't like how, pretty much, your party became whose ass you wanted to look at instead of unique fighters who you'd put in for their individual strengths according to what you're fighting.

I LOVED the political plot line... but I HATED that it felt like character development was sacrificed for it. There was very little in the way of character-character interaction that added to THEM (quirks, habits, um... PERSONALITY beyond your first impression), and not to the plot.

...so yes. Um... FFXII... good game, but it could have been tons better. Because it is SO possible to have deep, twisty, political storyline with fucktons of characterization. I'm looking at you FFT!

I'm here to word everything you just said and second the love for FFT, basically. Tactics is so much win. None of the Ivalice spinoffs did it justice.

Seriously, though. I really wish that Squenix would stop implying the newer games are part of FFT canon. It's not the same Ivalice. Not even close. Although 'Vagrant Story' can tag along- that game is wicked. And unlike FFXII manages to do "OLD TYME SPEEK" without sounding horrifically overwrought.

Oh lawd yes. I tell myself that Tactics Advance was set in some kind of weird, AU Ivalice because it's the only way I can soothe my tortured soul. Seriously, that game was like bad fanfiction. (YES, let's have some elementary school kids travel to another world and save the day! Sometimes I hate how third-party developers feel the burning need to dumb everything down for the kiddies if they're releasing for the Nintendo handheld consoles.)

I kind of like what they did with the races, though (even if it was entirely tacked on, universe-wise...) - and I would have had more interest in XII if you could play more races and their race were actually relevant to gameplay. But nooo, the only non-human playable character is a hot bunny girl (not dissing Fran, just... come on.)

I am a bad fan. I have not played Vagrant Story, sob, though I hear it is amazing.
