isn't the march eridan thing like 3 years old by now?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
so this is a repeat then?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe I misread and it was 2 months ago OP first heard about the drama (or fandom pulled it up again?)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a repeat. Fandom pulled it up again. (Because that's what tumblr does; breathe new life into wank that ought to have died by now.)

Well, what's the context?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
the context is some people draw a guy in a dress, and some people take it to mean LOL TRANS PEOPLE. fucking with society's idea of gendered clothes or playing with genderfluid presentation = inherently insulting to trans people. i guess because trans women get called "a guy in a dress" that means putting a male-shaped person in a dress for any reason is ofc a dig at them specifically? that's p much it.

not saying march eridan can never be side-eyed for misoginistic or transphobic attitudes/messages in some of the fanart, and a ton of it is OOC as hell, but so is most normal fanart, and some of those crusaders have pushed it into a whole NO THE CONCEPT ITSELF IS TRANSPHOBIC, BURN IT DOWN!!!! and that just... umm.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Treating an AMAB person who is dressing in "women's" clothing as a joke is inherently transphobic, yes.

Also, yes, a lot of drag culture is based on transmisogyny and Ru Paul is a notorious transmisogynist so...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What?
I'm confused.
Links please?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone treats March Eridan a joke, though. I'm not going to deny that there are those who do treat it as a joke, but for a lot of people it's just an excuse to draw a charcter they like wearing pretty dresses. I see nothing transphobic about that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not transphobic. It's sexist.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
what's AMAB

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
assigned male at birth i think

This is so fucking dumb. It isn't transphobic, it's misogynist. It's not "look at him, he's a tranny" but "look at him, he's a man but he's wearing women's clothes and women are weak and inferior". The same reason why we have things like "you fight like a girl" or people laughing at men who are into 'girly' things. Get your head out of your ass.

The trans movement has hijacked women's and LGBQ issues.

What if it's treated as hot? HP fandom used to do the prettiest fanart of Harry or Draco or... any of the guys actually... dressed up in (often skimpy) women's clothing. Such good fap material... *memories*

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
it's not treated as such though

It can be transphobic but it's not inherently so. It's only for sure transphobic when someone shouts slurs specifically aimed at trans people, but otherwise like the other anons said it's in general about sexism.

Ru Paul does have some issues but that does not mean that every drag queen is transphobic.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Am I supposed to hate on Eddie Izzard now? He's an executive transvestite (a man in a dress) and I thought he was pretty goddamn funny.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. Trans people and drag culture can get along famously, but March Eridan is anything but that. Most of them are about making fun of Eridan.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I vaguely recall seeing something about this around the end of February this year, and thinking "who the hell still cares about March Eridan?"

I've come to the conclusion that anything cis people do is going to be transphobic. RuPaul's Drag Race is probably transphobic because a major network is capitalizing on drag. Which is not even an exclusive trans thing, but try telling that to tumblr?

I don't know what I'm saying anymore. I liked it better when March Eridan wank was about how bad the original picture was.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
The idea is that making a joke about a man wearing women's clothes = transphobia. Transmisogyny, specifically, if I remember that wank properly. If you genuinely just want to draw your favorite character in pretty clothes, no joke or judgment intended, then it wouldn't be considered transphobic.

And yes, the people who think March Eridan is transphobic often also think that RuPaul's Drag Race is transphobic.

Holy shit I can't believe march eridan is still a thing.
is there even anyone left in the fandom that remembers the whole joke's origins?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
TV Tropes?

*flees*

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Welcome to tumblr, where LITERALLY FUCKING EVERYTHING is transphobia.
