Slow TV?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
First it was the Norwegians and a boat trip up a fjord broadcast in real time, then the BBC did a two hour canal trip with just a camera bolted on to the front of a barge. Now the BBC have topped even that, I am legit watching the BBC show some sleeping barn owl chicks, and the soundtrack is just them snoring. And it is unmissable!!

Not just a boat trip! We (Norwegians) have also had a train trip (Oslo -> Bergen I think? Which is around 7-8 hours if I remember correctly) and singing through nearly 900 psalms (a total of 60 hours or so). There was also around 12 hours of knitting and another 12 of just watching a fire burning in a fireplace.

We really like slow TV here apparently! (I must admit to have only watched a bit of the psalms program myself during a visit at my grandmother's)

i dunno man. i mean i could get behind the fireplace tv, but knitting just sounds too dynamic. i don't think i could take the pace of that.

Our local TV station was the one station that actually started the tradition of playing nothing but footage of a fireplace with logs burning during the Christmas season. It started doing it back around 98' or so, and has since then been picked up by various other channels.

A NYC tradition is on Christmas day to play just a log burning, called the yuletide log. It plays the entire Christmas day so that those who don't have fireplaces in the city can still have a Christmas fire. At least that's how it was explained to me as a child.

As an adult, I think it was the TV station's way of giving as many employees off as possible for the holiday. That's one of the reasons why TBS airs a 24 marathon of a Christmas Story, because you only need a skeleton crew at the station.
