Call the hospital and ask for payment plans. Often, hospitals are willing to work with you just so you pay them back. Hell, sometimes if you offer to pay an amount in full (or in cash) they will knock off some money from your bill.

Late, but this. If billing won't help, go to the Patient Advocate at the hospital, and they'll put some pressure on the billing folks. If your friend is fairly low income, it's not uncommon for them to take like $25/mo until you can pay it off.
