No, that's a fair point, and obviously it's not going to replace it.

I think what bothers me about it in this case is it just feels so pointless and self-defeating. Because it seems like it'd be impossible to replicate the things that make it a good movie in a remake. In a lot of ways, I don't think you can really remake it. It just seems futile, and so it's frustrating to watch someone try. And there's also anticipation - not just anticipating a movie that I think is going to be bad get released, and probably watching whoever's making it completely misunderstand the movie, but also the endless rounds of casting news, promo pictures, trailers, thinkpieces, promotion, etc.

IDK. I might also just be in a gloomy mood today.

Well I wouldn't want someone to try to replicate what worked in the original anyway since I agree that it's pretty pointless, so I tend to be more intrigued by remakes that seem like they're not actually trying. I prefer to see them try to do something unexpected with it.

I don't really know why, but I get really into looking at remakes and adaptations and things like that and analyzing the changes and what worked and what didn't. And with that attitude, it's just no fun when one is practically the same as the other.

I agree with that in principle. But I think there are some things where remakes just don't make sense, and it's hard to see what interesting change or angle you could take on something, because the qualities that they have are so specific to the works in question. And for me, Big Trouble falls into that category.

I refute that by saying the remake of Karate Kid was better.

I honestly tried to sit down and re-watch the original....it was kind of painful. The only good thing about it was Mr. Miyagi.

But the remake? Pretty fun to watch and felt more genuine. Despite the fact that wasn't karate. :P

I prefer the remake too even though it should have been The Kung-Fu Kid. But I seem to have a bias against 80s movies. I don't know what it is.

I can't comment, being that I never watched the remake, and I barely remember watching the original since I haven't seen it since I was a kid

but to be clear, my position is not that all remakes are bad. just that this specific remake bums me out.
