Re: Judging Thread
(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)I think that people who give their pets to shelters aren't doing anything malicious.
I think a lot of them might falsely presume that a shelter will be able to more easily place the pet than they themselves would.
I do judge the hell out of people who abandon their pets on the side of the road however.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I don't blame the shelters, mind - they never have the space, money, or resources that they need. They can only try to do the best they can with the circumstances.
But being ignorant of what you're doing to your pet doesn't absolve you of responsibility.

Re: Judging Thread
(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I do think there are situations that are absolute emergencies. And it's not even necessarily rehoming pets that I'm against - I'd rather no pet lived where it wasn't wanted and given the attention it deserved. Generally, I also think people who can't afford pets shouldn't have pets either. But I still think the first course of action is always to try to rehome it yourself. Ask around, do your very best to try to rehome the pet yourself. If, after all of that, you can't find anyone to take the pet, then of course a shelter is the only option left. You have to remember that your cat or dog is probably going to die in that shelter, no one should live in this delusion where they are instantly going to be happily adopted. And even at the rare no-kill shelter, life inside the shelter is shitty, terrifying, and dangerous (lots of exposure to other animals, sickness spreads easily). Everyone I think has a responsibility as a decent human being to try to spare their pet that.

You can say it's cruel to the poor animals, but I truly don't think that people do so maliciously for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)You call them stupid and ignorant. I don't think you know what malice is.
