Yes. And even worse when they just drop said pet off at the side of the road or leave it and abandon the house.

Still better than people who abuse animals, though. Anyone who hits their pet deserves a much longer jail sentence than it is possible to give under our current laws.

We adopted our dog from a shelter -- she was brought in by someone who found her by the side of the road.

We used to have to watch her like a hawk because whenever either of my parents would try to leave (just to get groceries or something), she would run after the car.

I'll never forgive the people who abandoned her like that. It's so fucking traumatizing. And it took years before she stopped that behavior.

My roommate's cat (who has basically now adopted me as her own too) invited herself in to my roommate's last apartment. She had been abandoned and living on the street for several years. She's still a nervous thing. It took her a while to warm up to me.

Also the dog we had at a kid we got at a pet store (no shelters where we were), and we're pretty sure the pet store abused him. He was always skiddish and scared of everything.

And I'll never forgive either of those sets of people.

I hate to say it, but the dog you got probably came from a puppy mill. Most stores get animals from there from what I understand.

But it's good that you were able to give him a loving home.

Oh, probably. This was in the Philippines, and there weren't shelters, at least as far as my parents were aware. This was a pet store in a mall.

When I eventually get my own dogs, they will absolutely be shelter dogs.

Yes, he lived a very happy life. And he was super protective of us. There was one time where we were coming back to the US for a few months and we were giving him to a family to watch him for us. I stayed over the first night to make him comfortable. The family said that he stood by my sleeping bag guarding me all night.
