I noticed they were gone, but I don't remember the meltdown. What happened? I remember finding them kind of obnoxious.

I can't remember exactly. They disappeared, then their friend came in and said they were having problems of some kind? Then they came back briefly and there was an odd thread about the return, but I just can't remember. I just remember it was weird.

I remember speculation that they were going to prison but I don't think it was ever confirmed.

If I recall correctly, their eventual explanation was that they had taken on a new job, gotten really, really stressed about it, and then ultimately had some sort of acute mental health issue as a result of that. That was the tenor of the drift as I recall it anyway.
