I honestly found it kinda refreshing that they were extremely difficult to ship, lol.

Really? I agree with the person above you that it definitely wasn't "practically canon", but I thought they were really easy to ship. At least their dynamic/personalities were easy to ship, but if you mean it was difficult because they were gross and dirty-looking, then I agree lol

I considered it a rare example of partners who don't just snap and snark a lot in spite of their affection for each other but are genuinely incompatible personalities and can actually barely get along. The friendship being a friendship by the end was a situational miracle. What the hell is gross and dirty-looking about younger Rust, lol; my bigger problem would have been that Marty was a substantially more shitty human being who dug up his own grave of loneliness with lies and abuse, but I can see the appeal of him crawling into a relationship with Rust at that point, I guess.

NA. I ship them not as lovers, but as situational fuckbuddies. Circumstances rubs them against each other until they take it out on each other through extremes. Both (but mostly Marty) are provoked into it, fighting to make sense of perspectives they don't understand. And both are bulldogs: tugging and pulling until they get a result one way or another, with any means necessary (supported in canon through the meth lab scene). Destructo nookie isn't that far a stretch. And since they have the bulldog trait in common, they actually end up respecting the other more after they fight (or fuck) for their beliefs than before. Hence: true friendship.

You're right, for some reason I was thinking more about the older one.

And you have a point, they're not the typical pairing with the good-natured bickering where they pretend to hate each other but obviously care about each other. They genuinely don't get along, at least at first. So it's not exactly easy to ship in the traditional way, but if you like angsty, fucked up, not-exactly-healthy relationships then I think it's pretty damn shippable, or at least that's how I see it.
