The secret asked what people claiming to not be in fandom are going on about, since they're clearly in fandomsecrets. I just asserted that, srsly, some of us really aren't in fandom.

Well, given that there's a complete lack of tone in text, you seemed defensive as to why you're here. Personally, I and I'm sure most other people, don't care if you hang with us. It's when those twits get some sort of superiority complex that it just irks.

Also, EVERYONE is in fandom, they just don't know it. If you're a fan, if you talk about something you like, doesn't that count as fandom? Even if you don't do it online, it's of a fannish nature. That's fandom. If you go to a sports game to hand with your boys, you guys are in fandom. If you hang out with your scrapbooking crew, that's fandom. Fandom extends beyond the interwebs people! [/soapbox]

I actually don't agree with that definiton at all, and in fact ended up a fandom wank a while back in a far more heated discussion (kinda sorta) about it. While I agree that you could technically broaded the definition to mean that on semantics alone, there is a generally accepted definition of fandom that is restricted to the internet and internet-based activities such as conventions. I know I am exlcuding fanzine circles and the like of old media, but those are virtually nonexistent anymore =\

Basic definitions of social groups tend to be defined by society, not a dictionary. Fandom is more than just the enjoyment of media, it's actively and consistently participating in in-depth discussion and contributing creatively. I love Resident Evil 4 to bits, but I don't write fic for it, have discussion about it, or even join comms for it. I am not in Resident Evil 4 fandom.
