4. Yeah. I sympathise. On LJ, it can often feel as though everyone is greatest and most bestest pals with everyone else, except you, left out in the cold. My advice is to give up on LJ as a means to make friends. Okay, that wasn't very helpful, was it? But all the tips I can give you are fairly self-evident, and as you seem like a thoughtful kind of person, I'm sure you'll have worked them out already. Anyway, here's my few pennies (I am English! I will not be oppressed by the US 'cents'!).

Know your audience. Don't write about what bores you, 'cos it'll show, but don't write purely for yourself either. Are there people on your flist who like meta? Write that. Like a particular character that doesn't feature much in fanfic? Turn out a few drabbles. If you want to write about yourself, make it funny or satirical, without whinging. Always think before writing something whether it will interest your flist, or have them yawning. Supply the flist with what they want. Be their procurer make your entries their rentboys.

It can help if you post (quite neutrally, so as not to piss off anyone) about some kind of controversy. That invites their opinion. Or post about something that has happened that has annoyed you (or, more importantly, you think will annoy them), tut-tut a bit, and let the sarcastic comments roll in. Recs, and other (flattering) things that mention LJ people's usernames are good too.

Henry IV's advice to his son is more geared towards gaining and keeping the throne of England (I certainly won't discourage you from that route to fame, some people like LJ, others like regicide, I wouldn't wish to prejudice you either way), but is apt for your situation: "By being seldom seen, I could not stir/ But like a comet I was wonder'd at". So, on no account surfeit your online friends with sweetness. Know when to shut up. Only post every few days, and comment only if you have something interesting to say, if you're leaving a review for someone, which no writer will object to, or etiquette (e.g. "My iguana has died!" "That's very very sad.") obliges you to come up with sympathy or congratulations.

LiveJournal is a performance. Perform.

Of course, I just use mine to whinge about the weather. ;)

7. Ahahahaha! A Harmonian! (Not quite though - if you were the true blue variety, you'd still be insisting the H/Hr was canon really and JKR was just on hallucinogenic drugs when she wrote Book 7.)

39. Yes. For shame. :P

tl;dr.

I GOT THERE FIRST!

4 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-25 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've had trouble making friends since I was very young. I admit I am more comfortable with doing so online and since I spend a great deal of time on LJ...I just figured this was a good place to start or get myself comfortable.

But your advice made me laugh! Thank you! XD The advice I am getting from people now alone is enough to make me keep trying because I see there are some really nice people out there. :D I wish I could befriend you all.

I always make my posts, or try to, comical- even if I'm not feeling that way. And for the ones that don't comment or seem to care enough to reply to comments I leave them (in their LJs), well I try to include fandoms and interests they like into my posts but that doesn't seem to grab their interest, either.

However...I see what you are saying and will try out your other advice. I'm very grateful for your help and you seem like such a wonderful person. :)

Oh, I am, I am. :)

Good luck.

if you were the true blue variety

That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Lumping all shippers under the crazy pen, even though those with the loudest voices and the craziest ideas definitely aren't the majority. It gets old after a while, especially since the series is effectively over.

[identity profile] falco-999.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the ones with the quieter voices should perhaps speak up a bit louder and more often, so as to tell their batshit shipmates to kindly shut it, instead of complaining that they're being badly hard done to. Ever since the release of HBP, by far the most prominent strand of the H/Hr's have been the delusional, stupid and occasionally outright rude kind, who have collected into cliques at places like the Portkey, separate from the main HP fandom, and turned gangrenous with spite and sentimentality.

If you want to know why people who actively ship H/Hr are looked on with distrust and some degree of derision until proved sane, it's because there's a long history of people from your ship demonstrating behaviour that's worthy of both.
