Damien's introduction was pretty much the last straw for me, and I finally stopped reading comics after his introduction (him and the return of Hal Jordan). Tim is my Robin. I really disliked what they were doing, and I disliked the very idea of Damien.

Did I write this comment and forget it?

Curses on Damien, now I'll never find out if Tim loses his virginity because I had to stop reading.

Tim is my Robin, but I actually liked Damian after he started showing signs of character development. He was an interesting idea that didn't achieve potential. There just wasn't enough development and too much sidelining of Tim.

I can see where Hal Jordan returning can annoy some people (same thing with Barry Allen) but Hal has REALLY made himself into an interesting character and Barry has made reading the Flash very enjoyable whereas I never really got into Wally.

Fuck Damian, though.

I started Green Lantern with Kyle (like literally his first issue). I had no attachment to Hal at all. I did read the first graphic novel of Hal's return and it was good. But it was also filled with supporting characters I had never met. It really felt like they were just plopping readers right back where they left off, which didn't help me as I knew nothing about Hal except what Kyle learned. Kyle never dealt with Carol, etc. So, it felt like a completely new title that had nothing whatsoever to do with what I had been reading.

I also disliked where they were going with Kyle's storyline. I would've rather he stayed on earth and that his Ion powers weren't some alien insect or whatever. I don't just get invested in the hero, but also his friends and family and what's going on in his life. One of the things about Kyle's run is that it actually wasn't about the Corp. So, for me, I had no interest in the Corp and the idea of an alien police force; I just liked Kyle's artistic brain coming up with all these creative ways to use the ring. When Hal came back, they also reinstated the original focus and that felt alien to me too. It was still Kyle out in space but the feel was very different and they changed the supporting cast. (I wanted more Kyle-Connor road trips.)

I agree about Wally. As a Kyle fan, Wally gave him so much crap. Wally was okay in his own title (what little I read of it) or when paired with Dick Grayson but I never warmed up to him at all. I actually would've preferred Barry to return, but that didn't happen by the time I stopped reading comics.

I started Green Lantern with Justice League International. Guy Gardner's my Green Lantern. But while I did read Emerald Twilight as it was part of the Death and Return of Superman arc, I didn't actually get started seriously reading Kyle's era until shortly around Zero Hour (when Hal was still Parallax.) So on some level, Kyle's my Green Lantern, too. Hal has always been captain whitebread, so while I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the end of the Kyle era, I was pleased to see that Hal was no longer two-dimensional.

The thing is, I enjoy Guy Gardner and John Stewart equally as much as Kyle, and both of them have gotten a lot more panel time in the comics in the years since Rebirth. I find them all very interesting characters for very different reasons, and watching the way all four of them (Hal included) have gone their individual paths has been very rewarding for a longtime reader.

New Guardians, by the way, felt like an attempt to return to the vintage sci-fi vibe of Kyle era GL, though you may not like it as it's the a few logical steps up from the Ion stuff.

One of the things I liked the most about Kyle's run was when Kyle, John, and Alan hung out with Guy at his club. Alan Scott vies with Kyle for my love. I liked John as he was in Kyle's run, mellow and established.

I ended up liking Guy but he didn't leave a good first impression on me. Kyle was close to the first ever DC title I ever read, and I was totally at sea about all the random people who showed up. Guy showed up first as Warrior and kills this guy (and I think it's really early on in the series run). I had no idea who he was or what was going on. But the bonding moments with the other GLs showed his better sides. I don't think he'll ever be a favorite but I do like when he's bantering with Kyle.

To be fair, Guy's earliest portrayals post-Crisis has him being a huge asshole to everyone. But it was Justice League International and he fit with the rest of the ensemble cast who were mostly a bunch of funny B listers (and Angry Dad!Batman) who always managed to make everyone wonder how they got anything done and surprise everyone when they succeeded.

The Warrior series was pretty shitty -- as the 90s wore on he was going full Liefeld. They eventually killed him off in Our Worlds At War (he came back pretty quickly, though.)

You hate bicycles and you don't like Wally West?

Wow.

I don't hate bicycles, I just hate the people who ride 'em.

And Wally West is okay, I just never cared for his feature comic. I liked him better in the JL comics.

I feel like the rare Batman fan who actually likes both Tim and Damian. Watching the Damian fans shit on Tim, and vice versa, has been ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Tim a lot, but I also find some of those drawings and similar ones funny. I don't really think the fact that Tim is getting hurt is funny in itself, but I do find Damian's melodrama kind of amusing. I think a lot of the time, Tim's anguish isn't supposed to be the funny part; it's the fact that Damian is clearly overreacting and unreasonably hates Tim to the point of doing some Wile E Coyote shit that's supposed to be funny. I don't really like it when it's obvious that the artist/whatever sincerely hates Tim and we're supposed to wholeheartedly endorse whatever Damian is doing to him.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This sounds really obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when you read a post where it seems like they're just reveling in shitting on Tim, they're probably doing just that. Many Damian fans really can't stand Tim, so the reason why those posts bother you is why those posts appeal to them.

But the tamer examples (like the washing machine one) are probably just people poking fun at both characters or, as anon above said, being amused by how over-the-top Damian's behavior is in those posts.
