I really REALLY wanted to play this because I love studying that period of history, but that scene where you have to survive a shell bombardment gave me so much stress I had to stop playing. And I know that was the point, and the scene was done really well to have evoked such intense feelings in me, but unfortunately I just had to stop.

Dear GOD, I'm a baby.

There's only one scene worse than that, but I'd say it's much worse--the depiction of the Nivelle Offensive towards the end of the game.

THAT GAME. THE PAIN.

(I... don't think a WWII sequel would work quite as well, either. And tbh, WWII has been done to death. I agree that part of what made it awesome was the focus on the First World War.)

The very last stage of this game was the single worst thing a video game has ever done to me. What the fuck, guys? What the fuck?
And now of course I'm replaying it because I'm an obsessive completionist and I want to find all the artifacts.

On a completely unrelated note, I was interested to see that they thanked the Australian War Memorial in the credits - even though they never even mention Australia during the game. This is because, while the British lost a lot of their WWI records when they were getting the shit bombed out of them in WWII, Australia's were just fine! [Because we didn't keep 'em in Darwin]

YES!!!!! Omg, the charm of the game entirely was how strange the era was even thought it was only a hundred year ago. I too went back and collected all the bits and read all the flavor text explaining what their uses were.

I also found it fascinating that the game became darker AND less fantastical at the end. It became more disturbing as it more closely followed reality, instead of the other way around.

And Emile, oh god Emile. *Cries*
