This is a TV SHOW, but the bones of that episode are there in that link. We have a super-secret organization that has been hunting down and 'lobotomizing' or killing people who are 'sensate'. They have money, and a network of doctors and authority figures that can back them up, bulldoze red tape and lie for them. In this universe? Totally possible.
In our universe? Also possible. Because they were stating that her new ability was actually something like cancer, and was affecting her ability to think and act clearly, they had precedent.
