Probably elaborate fantasies involving themselves and the character? When I have a crush on a character I tend to still imagine them with other characters, but I feel like this is still fairly common. There's nothing wrong with it.

Yes, that's it, you're totally right. I do get crushes on characters a lot, but this is the first time I actually think we'd totally hit it off, no matter the differences, so I somehow started shipping myself with them (having elaborate fantasies about them and whole songs to go with those is what makes it really embarrassing for me, I think).

Well, I drift off thinking about various player characters and their LI's, so I sort of get you? I might not be those characters, but it's still self-indulgent.

There are worse things for you to fantasize about! (And frankly, it sounds fun.)

I was wondering too at first but now that you mention it...yes. I have tons of fandom cruses and almost all of them have other characters I ship them with and that's part of how I enjoy my crush. I never imagine them with myself, it's very uneappealing maybe because basically all of mine are animated or drawn and I can't imagine them as "real" people

I can't imagine myself with them either, even when my crushes are in live action things, played by actual actors.

It seems far fetched in a way I can't process, but pairing them with other people in canon can almost be a weird way to vicariously live through the ship. (Even if you aren't particularly like the character you ship the crush with. If you want to see the crush happy, you might delight in shipping them with someone who makes them so, etc.)

And with games where you can customize your player character it can be another level of personal, because if you want you can make an ideal version of yourself then ship that character with others, lol.

I don't usually do it consciously (I have once, in Sims, but I didn't pair myself up with any fandom characters, just became friends with them), but it happens.

are you me??? I basically do romance vicariously through characters. I'm not even that upset about the fact that I started doing it as my first RL relationship was falling apart. It filled a void. Now it's more habit than sorrow, but it still fills that void XD

I wonder if I'd still be interested if I got a serious boyfriend again. Probably, but maybe not to the same degree.

Haha, no, not quite you! But I don't think it's even remotely uncommon for people to live vicariously through gaming, even if there's no romance involved. It's even kind of expected to an extent, given how much freedom some series give you now.

And while I know some people probably do get so into fictional romances because it fills a void in their own life, it can also just be because you love romance (And the characters, of course), you know? Even if you have a serious relationship, that doesn't mean you can't have a good time with it! (I have a friend who's married but adores BioWare games. The romances are one of her favorite parts of the games and she was basically in love with both Garrus and Alistair, lol.)
