this reminds me of something about unicorns and purity that I read in Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory collaborations. Basically, there was a huge difference between being abstinent and being celibate. Being abstinent was pretty easy, you just don't have sex. Being celibate was much harder and you couldn't even think about sex or have lustful urges. This made it rather difficult for one of the main characters who happened to accidentally become a unicorn knight and then fallen in love. It was implied that there were other unicorn knights that didn't find the whole celibacy idea a hardship because they didn't have those urges. (They were also elven. Though why that should make a difference, I'm not sure.)
