If I'm just kind of tired and not feeling great, I'll say something like "I'll stop by for an hour or so, but I really have to do a thing after / get to bed early because of the thing tomorrow / I'm pretty tired so I'll probably only be out for a little while." I commit myself to pretending to be disappointed to leave, even if I'm quietly looking forward to getting the hell out of there.
Or, if I'm feeling genuinely too horrible to be an actual person who stands upright and makes words, I counteroffer. "Can't do tonight on such short notice, sorry. Why don't we get coffee / go see a movie next week?" More time to psych yourself up and a less stressful activity.
The aim is to make yourself as comfortable as possible while letting your friends know that you still want to see them.
