The thing is people are crying about it when they know next to nothing about the source material's progression other than the end game. As far as I know, the three novels heavily focuses on Kumiko and Reina's relationship. It's not like they're going to shove Shuuichi and Kumiko's love story in their faces. The same with Reina's side. She's 15 years old and it might as well just be idolization or admiration. Remember that this is a mainstream novel, of course they aren't going to push that pairing.

Either way, even if you do focus on shipping KumiRei, you'd have so much to work with. Even if it's not explicitly romantic, the novels explores and develops their relationship as a whole. You're not going to have a shortage of bait.

It's like the author never intended for the romance either. So I agree with you re: watching the show for the concert band. As far as I know the ShuuKumi sub plot is pushed towards the end of the 4th novel -- which is just a collection of short stories instead of being part of the main story line. It sucks because ~*~my pairing lost to underdeveloped het~*~ but eh.
