#27: East Coast Rising is fucking awesome. But I fucking hate the use of the word "manga" for comics made outside Japan. I just blogged about this earlier today (http://puritybrown.blogspot.com/2008/01/just-to-make-my-own-position-clear.html), heh.

Really, I don't care what people call the damn thing as long as they READ it. D: ECR just ends up getting shelved with the "manga" as opposed to the "graphic novels".

I think the labelling of ECR and similar stuff as "manga" just irritates people who like actual manga, as the secret implies, and does the good Tokyopop OEL series no favours whatsoever. (Not to mention: people who like Cloonan's work that's appeared elsewhere, like American Virgin or Demo, might just overlook ECR because it's shelved with the TPop stuff. Grah.)

I can't wait for volume 2! ...that's a problem with TPop's OEL titles: the wait between volumes is way long! (Anxiously awaiting vol 3 of Off*Beat, vol 2 of King City, vol 3 of Earthlight...)

Why can't we just shelve all graphic novels together? D: Or shelve them in their actual genre, since it's not like graphic novel is a cohesive genre anyway?

Becky's actually discussed why the OEL line takes so long to come out-- it's because pages aren't done on a schedule for an anthology the way the Japanese ones are.

I agree with this comment and I agree with your blog post and I agree with this thread. Rahhhh calling any American comics manga is one of my hugest pet peeves ever. I mean. The difference between manga and Western comics isn't artistic, it's cultural. The whole thing is just stupid.

And I would probably be more interested in arbitrarily picking up "OEL manga" if it a) wasn't called manga and b) was published by someone besides TokyoPop, as I hate the company's guts. OT, but it's true.

Thank God my bookstores shelve the manga with the graphic novels, though!
