As a fan of the medium of comic art as a whole, these sorts of arguments always make me snort, a little; then I want to drink tea and insist that anything from Europe be called Bandes Dessinee, to satisfy the pedant that beats at the centre of my soul.

Different countries will have different cultural approaches to the artform at the end of the day, just like they do to any medium. But TV is TV and movies are movies and comics are comics. Marketing folks should Get A Clue and stop trying to force the issue. Meanwhile, readers should just appeciate the books on their own terms and not on a perception (or on what TOKYOPOP or similar says).

Becky Cloonan is WIN, by the way. Fantastic artist and a smart woman. Easily one of my favourite female artists on the US circuit.

Someone a few pages back did try to insist that Persepolis be called bandes dessinee.

Heh. Yeah, that's not a great surprise to me, being both European and a comic fan. Have we gotten to the indie rock side of major label/minor label/ooh book publisher! yet?

Really, a lot of that sort of shit has passed on by in the comic book industry these days. It's a different beast than it was 10 years ago. And I'm very glad. My other half was one of the angry young men of comic book journalism at one time, and we laugh often about the fact that it's a relief to have less to be angry about, now XD
