One of the reasons I love the Star Wars Saga (and, especially, the prequels) so much is that the story of the Skywalker family basically is my family's story scaled larger and made operatic. My dad didn't have the best childhood and comes from a poor desert country while my mom grew up in a rich European nation. My dad's very emotionally needy and could be very selfish, even verbally abusive to my sister. But I do think he loves us and is trying to do better. My mom was rather naive and didn't see how bad it was for a long time, especially because she loved him so much.

My sister is still very (understandably) angry and bitter at our father for how he treated her. But I see him trying (he doesn't always succeed) and I still believe in him and love him. I also try to remind him, whenever he gets upset with my sister, that it's his fault their relationship is so bad. I think that's why Luke is one of my favorites - I identify so much with him. It's also why I get upset that Leia's story and feelings were kind of brushed under the rug by Lucas.

I get that people find Anakin annoying, but I see so much of my father in him. And I identify with him as well - I don't have a lot of people in my life and I am terrified of losing them. There's little I wouldn't do to keep them safe. They're everything to me.
