I ask because for some reason, I was thinking about how on 9/11 - when the twin towers were still falling and no one was really sure what was going on - a firefighter about to go in was interviewed. The reporter asked him why, and he said "my brothers are in there."

It's haunted me to this day, and I wonder whether he got out...

Someone on a forum I've been going to for years disappeared in the middle of writing a fanfic, and we have no clue what happened. The last we heard her home computer was broken, and she got into huge trouble from her boss for using the internet at work. So we're not sure if that has something to do with it. The really weird thing is that a close forum friend of hers sent her a PM, and she saw that it had been read - but never responded to. This was years ago, probably 2002ish, and even though a lot of us are still there, she's never popped back in. I've always been a bit concerned, though really, my guess is between getting in trouble and not having a home computer, she needed a break, and just fell out of sync. But I do wish she'd let us know she's okay, even all these years later. :/

Also, I don't think this was the above friend because we never talked on MSN, but YEARS ago my Mom and I shared a computer, and one day my Mom told me she got an IM for me saying "Hi! It's been years!" For some reason my Mom closed it, meaning I never knew who it was. :(

Honestly, it's possible she never really felt as close with forum members as they did her. I saw that happen a lot in fandom - without face to face interaction you can't tell as easily when a seemingly close relationship is mutual. Especially if she ignored a PM.

Speaking from personal experience, it's probably depression related. Sometimes when you fall off the radar because of life disasters, you fall HARD. And then you feel embarrassed about it so you avoid the people you used to know, even though they wouldn't be mean or anything, they just want to know if you're okay. Somehow it just feels like too much effort and that everyone would be better off without you.

AYRT - I'm not sure about depression, I certainly hope not! But I do think you're onto something, where she was frustrated with things and when she finally got back it just seemed fruitless trying to re-establish her old relationships.

There is this guy we had in our guild named Wiggums. We recruited him and he raided with us for several weeks. He was friendly and sociable. One day, we (myself, Wiggums, my sister, and some other guildies) were doing some dungeons and talking over Vent.

He suddenly says he has to leave because his girlfriend is at his house, acting crazy, and trying to fight him. He logged and we never saw him again.

Wow... that's really, really eerie. Did you know any RL details about him at all?

Nope. We had some general information from when he applied for the guild (Time Zone and such), but nothing else. My sister and I still wonder about him.

Wow. Well, hopefully he just got busy helping his girlfriend, or was too embarrassed to go on again.

I hope so. I just hope she didn't like...murder him and we are the only witnesses and no one ever found out. >.>

I've talked about it before but I really wonder what happened. It was almost over. The mod just disappeared without a word.

I wasn't involved with this so I have no idea, but I think sometimes people just lose interest and either realize too late that they never finished something (or someone they expected to help didn't step up while they were unavailable), OR they just plain don't consider how it might affect others. :/

I noticed that and was wondering too. I was following it just to read the fics and then nothing ever showed up.

in cases like this, maybe the participants could make a new community and have everyone post their stuff?

A lot of fanfic writers, really -- ones who were regularly posting WIP fic and then just disappeared and never finished the fics or wrote anything new. Were they just burnt out or did something happen? One in particular I remember was a really old fic that eventually got swallowed up in ff.net's NC-17 purge, the author posted the second to last chapter with a note that the last chapter was finished but they'd decided to hold off posting it until next week to add to the suspense. The fic never updated again, the author never left so much as a note in their profile as to what happened and they had no other real online presence that I ever found. I always wonder if something bad happened to them.
