It is. (Most of Christopher Tolkien's extra stuff is very scholarly). But it's really fascinating to see Tolkien's mind working through the different drafts - to consider that he wrote everything out by hand and had a typist type up his work. And that there was only one manuscript to send off to the publishers - no word document backup.

It also gives insight into how he originally envisioned the world, how he worked out kinks, and some added depth to characters/plots that are only sketches in Silmarillion.

Even if you don't like Tolkien, it's a great study on an author's process.
