(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 07:06 am (UTC)(link)This is a big part of why I feel pretty indifferent about the Blackwall/Rainer case; a lot of companions have been no better. Plus, the shadier aspects of the Grand Game are present as just a thing that happens most of the time, like they’re sort of acceptable so long as you aren’t caught. It feels a little odd to condemn Rainier's actions so throughly when whoever sits on the Orlesian throat by that point in the game is probably responsible for worse, and the Inquisition just sort of collectively shrugs about it.

That's true. You can say you don't approve of the game, you can try to get a pretty straightforward outcome (I.E. not let anyone die, set anyone up, or play favorites) but there's no perfect choice. No matter what you do, the people given control have done reprehensible things as well. You can even let the Empress die, so with the ability to play the game so masterfully I find it a bit odd that some people think Blackwall is a terrible person, or beyond redemption. (Especially if they have no problem with other DA characters.)
He's no worse than most the other Dragon Age companions we've had, and he knows what he did was wrong. He might get defensive about it a few times, but all in all he's suffering because of the outcome of his actions; it weighs heavily on his mind and heart and he's trying to make up for it.
He's not my favorite but he's a decent character, and more interesting than originally expected.
