I eat my roommate's food w/o permission. Obviously asshole behavior, but how bad?

Can't tell.

How much, how often, do they know, and do you pay them back?

A small amount, so they don't notice. (ie a handful of chips but somewhat regular.)

And not really. I'll offer them my food sometimes however.

Why not let them know you do it and offer your food in return? Make it official. You're allowed to take some chips, they're allowed to take some of yours if they want.

Unless you're purposely not asking because they're the type that would refuse?

Bad. I was the roommate who had food stolen and if I hadn't gotten out of there within a few months I would have gone ballistic. Fucking ask if you want/need something, but don't just take. It's basic decency.

And if you have done this for a while your roommate's noticed. Trust me, even if it's just a handful of chips, it's not as subtle as you think it is.

No, that's completely within the roommate covenant, as long as you don't cross any of the major boundaries (IE, don't eat all of something, don't eat something if it's obviously something special, don't use ingredients they bought unless it's something banal like onions or garlic, don't gronk leftovers unless it's like pizza or something, etc).

As long as you don't flip your lid when they eat your food.

lol no

there is no "roommate covenant" unless they verbally agree on something like that

What? Uh no, if you eat my food without asking, I'm going to be looking for a new roommate. I used MY money to buy MY food and cooked MY food to feed myself. If there are leftovers, I already have plans for them. Leftover pizza is not magical community property, I'm going to be super pissed if someone takes a piece without asking.

Depends on how people feel about their food, but I'd hate you for it, anon. Especially since I'm on a budget and every mouthful you take is one I don't get to eat, plus it's food I have to replace on my own dime and effort. Why not be more responsible and shop and eat your own damn food?

Re: Am I an asshole? a thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But surely that's made up for by taking your roommate's food in return?

Re: Am I an asshole? a thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're asking me, than I wouldn't take my roommate's food without being invited or given permission. If the OP and their roommate have an established agreement that they don't mind a little give and take with their food, then it's all good. But if this is an agreement that only exists in the OP's head and they haven't checked with their roommate that this is okay, then no.

There's no good reason not to talk with the roommate about this. The only reason not to is if the OP suspects roommate wouldn't be cool with it and OP wants to keep sneaking the roommate's food under the cover of plausible deniability.

This. For me, too, I eat a very specific diet so anything they could offer me in return probably wouldn't be any good to me. So yeah, it's not a fair exchange at all.

But does your roommate bake hashish in their cookies?

They don't even cook.

Aww and here I was hoping you'd be Space Cakes Anon's roommate.

how bad depends on a few things...at least you acknowledge it's asshole behavior.

now please stop doing that.
