Re: Am I an asshole? a thread

I tell black people who complain about black characters getting ignored that they need to face the fact that a huge swathe of fandom just doesn't find these characters attractive.

I know it's an asshole thing to say. But I don't think they're doing themselves any favors by mentioning it over and over again.

At best, all they're going to get is shoddy, half-hearted fic or art from people who are guilted into offering token support.

So much of shipping is based on looks. You're never going to convince people who don't find a character attractive to ship them.

like...this seems like such a specific thing i have to wonder if you're actively looking for these people so you can purposely make them feel bad

No, it's more that I ship SOME black characters and I've noticed that, yeah, they're less popular.

But I HATE when there's complaining about it because then all you end up getting is an trickle of shitty fic,

Like, honestly, I'd rather just have a few well-written fics written by actual fans than people who are just guilted into doing it. They never do a good job.

That and I don't understand why they complain in the first place. They know WHY it happens. It's hardly a secret. But you can't exactly magically make people be attracted to these characters by berating them.

oh, okay. I believe you but I think the same way that they are not getting through to others, you arguing with them isn't going to get them to change their minds. but good luck.

I mean, I get that it's an asshole thing to do. But I just get so tired of beating about the bush.

Like, in MCU, if Sebastian Stan was playing Sam Wilson and Anthony Mackie was playing Bucky Barnes, I would not AT ALL be surprised if Steve/Sam was the more popular pairing.

I'd put fucking money down on it.

I'm not saying it's right, or fair or not racist. But it's the type of thing that you can't change by berating individual people or writing long rants to fandom.

Oh, I'm pretty sure they are, and getting off it, too.

so you tell black people that you think people don't like black people

"shoddy, half-hearted fic or art"? "token support"?

k

you're an asshole

Eh, I tell them:

Let's not pretend we're ignorant as to why fandom as a whole is less invested in black characters: they're less attracted to them.

Characters considered hot get more fic, no matter what race or gender or sexual orientation. Surprise! It's been like that in every fandom forever.

Writing long posts about how racist fandom is isn't going to make black characters more popular. All it's going to accomplish is getting people who feel guilty to make half-hearted contributions.

Like, I agree that fandom marginalizes black characters. But I think they're way of tackling it is SO ineffective. (And makes it more difficult for me to find quality fic of the pairings I do like).

if someone's only shipping because they think characters/actors are hot, i'm gonna assume that they don't care enough to keep them IC anyway.

Yeah, but TONS of people do that.

That's kind of my point...

well, if they're writing shitty fanfic for black characters, that's probably as good as they can write in the first place.

unless they only write porn, i guess! then the attraction thing makes more sense.
