A tube of toothpaste would win a personality contest with Batman.

Harsh. But true.

People say this all the time, but I've always thought Batman/Bruce Wayne had a pretty good personality? But I've never read any comics. But based on the Nolan trilogy, the Batman Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and various animated DC movies I have seen, he seems way more complicated and personable than what I hear people say on the web.

He does have a good personality -- he's a bit stoic and a control freak, but he's also capable of great warmth. Most people don't read comics, though, they just go by what they see on Facebook memes.

Yeah. And he can be a sarcastic asshole. It isn't out in the open like Deadpool or Tony Stark, but it is there. He obviously loves his family (the Batkids, Alfred). He also seems to have great respect (love?) for certain allies.

Yeah but

It takes some real leaps of logic to come to the conclusion that me referencing a simple fact (that there's a lot of shitty Batman memes on Facebook and that's where a lot of non-comic reading people get their impression of Batman) is somehow "bashy."

The problem with Batman is that Batman has been done and redone and done again so often that whatever quirks any one author gives him get ironed out by the next and so on and so on. So any real personality doesn't stick (unless he's not Bruce Wayne) and the overall image just coalesces one big caped ball of amorphous manpain.

How does that differ from any other comic book character?

Re: Who would win: Daredevil or Batman?

I'd say Superman has kept his essential personality a lot more steadily than Batman has over the years.

It might be because of what Supes started out as (a checklist of the everyman who is secretly godlike) rather than what Bats did (1%er who is so rich and smart that he can make himself into someone who is able to fight gods) but I think the progression of multimedia portrayals really capture it best. Batman goes from not a stand out to quirky to kind of an asshole to more and more bland with each new retelling.

Superman... kind of just keeps the bullet points. Much like Spidey does.

Different personalities based on different storyline/time periods seems a lot more entertaining to me than a character who never changes his personality through out the years.

How does Superman "Has these 8 personality traits all the time" have more of a personality than Batman "Different personality traits based on comic/movie/tv series"? Is it just consistency? If so, I wouldn't consider that having a better personality.

Well, as I said to dethtoll, the problem is when a new iteration of Batman comes along and he only has 3 personality traits because the last four got retconned.

Like, Arkham Asylum/City/etc is a really, really good example of this. It's a very distilled essence of Batman, and it winds up really lacking.

Outside of Frank Miller, that's not actually true, but do go ahead and tell me and other comic book fans what our favorite comic book characters are like while not actually reading comics yourself.

Re: Who would win: Daredevil or Batman?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-06-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Admittedly, the last time I cared to look at a Batman comic it was actually a Joker's Asylum comic (2010 I think?), but didn't I just say that the authors of different comic runs of Batman do give him divergent traits?

The problem is it all comes out in the wash. The Batman video games are probably the best current example of Batman boiled down to the Batman essence: big silent hyperintelligent guy in a cape with all of the manpain and maybe a thing for Catwoman. Also about as much personality as a piece of cardboard.

And I'm telling you that's not true. Thank you for proving my point about totally fucking ignoring people who read comics.

Re: Who would win: Daredevil or Batman?

So you're saying that the Batman in Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader is exactly the same as The Brave And The Bold is exactly the same as Legends Of The Dark Knight.

Well, okay. I distinctly do not recall that being the case, but hey what do I know.

Re: Who would win: Daredevil or Batman?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-06-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake. What you're describing is differing canons (some of which are throwbacks to the 1960s) and wildly different eras. But that's not even what you were implying -- that different writers would portray Batman as wildly different from run to run, which is categorically untrue. The modern Batman was established in the 1970s by Dennis O'Neil and other thank Frank Miller's awful take on the character, he has not changed dramatically since (outside of slow but steady character development, which is NOT the same thing.) The essence of the character has always been present in one form or another, shaped to the social norms of the day.

Re: Who would win: Daredevil or Batman?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-06-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's what I was getting at. And I'd go even further to say that with every new iteration that isn't a side series by a particularly good writer he gets pared down even more into blandocaust mode.

But whatever, this is a very silly argument.

Everyone's fault. He was the hero we deserved.
