Okay, except these weren't "her SIL's kids" that "she brought into the marriage", these were her sister's children.

And like, if she had been shown to have that much info "13/14 maybe?" that would have been fine, but she didn't even have a guess, she was going by height.

Like, I fucking loved Claire, don't get me wrong, but I did think that was frustrating, that she couldn't even guess how old her nephews were.

They're kids she hasn't seen in seven years. She guessed the older one at 'high school age' which is still a guess/pretty specific age range.

I dunno, I guess it didn't bother me terribly when their age was kind of irrelevant to finding them. It just seemed like another, "Oh look at what a terrible family person Claire is," stab.

IIRC she also broke a promise to them.

Like, you can criticize someone for being bad to their family and it not be about how they need to have teh baybez.

And I say this as someone who doesn't want kids. Not every little thing about a woman being pointed out as, "You fucked up in regards to your family" is about how they need to have kids.

Honestly it was really only the "If I have kids--" "When." exchange that got my hackles up.

I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with being a 'bad' aunt. I put that in quotation marks because honestly, I have aunts and uncles that I probably wouldn't even recognize in passing on the street. None of us live in the same country and we never have, so while there's that occasional family obligation that brings us together, it's pretty infrequent and I wouldn't consider them bad aunts or uncles for not knowing what I looked like or how old I was.

Except you're missing something here. Claire has moments where you see she WANTS to be a good aunt, and she lets things get in the way. This isn't a situation wherein she doesn't care. She does care. She wants things to be better with her family or she wouldn't have tried at all. She just doesn't really do anything to MAKE them better.

Just because YOU don't give a shit about your extended family doesn't mean that is the character's experience.

Man, I forget my own parents' ages sometimes. It's just not something I think about because it's not all that relevant to my relationship with them.

I really don't think it's a big deal. But society has this thing where you're supposed to care ooooh sooooo muuuuuch about everything relating to someone's child.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah you should care about stuff related to that child, if you're offering to take care of them. It's not like they just showed up at the park one day, she invited them to visit her and told her sister that she would look after her kids for the weekend/whatever... you'd think she'd at least have some clue as to how old they are.
