The first episodes of the original series also followed the manga quite closely, which is why the beginning are both seasons are pretty similar. The differences don't really start until after later in the series, though Crystal gets to basically all points a hell of a lot faster than the original (IIRC, the original had 5+ episodes of Usagi on her own as Sailor Moon, which was pretty painful to watch since she's a pretty annoying character before her development kicks in).

And PGSM is awesome. I still think it's the best incarnation of the story, since it's the only one that managed to get the pacing right (original anime is too slow, manga/Crystal are too fast).
