I watched all the OVAs. I loved them at the time. I even did fan art. I am afraid to go look at them again though, because yeah.

you may have hit on something there... calv-in vs ushi-o (ushi means cow) and a more or less imaginary tiger... sounds like more than a coincidence. It could have well been an inspiration.
