Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

it takes effort for me to meet daily protein needs as is. i am doing it but once in a while i'd like to drink a protein shake or have a protein bar in the morning and not worry about having to fill the daily quota of all that, you know?

If you're constructing your meals properly there shouldn't be too much of a reason to worry about quotas.

I'm not trying to be condescending, but I don't want to assume you're good with your nutrition and then have you go away not knowing how to be healthy. That's a good recipe for getting very sick very quickly. ...Are you aware of how to make complete proteins out of legumes, nuts, and grain combinations?

That said, there are vegan protein bars out there if you're just looking for something to take to work.

like i said, yes, but it takes effort as in meal planning and purchasing. more so because western cuisine is not something i normally eat and isn't normally stocked in my house by my family and GL being veg when most of what everyone eats around you is chinese i.e. fish and meat errywhere. i am asking for supplements that let me slack off a day or two in planning my daily meals because sometimes we could all use a break.

all that being said, any protein bars you'd rec?

Okay cool, just checking because I wouldn't want to let you go your way only to potentially develop health problems.

I'm in Canada so your results may vary, but I have tried Vegan Proteins +, CLIF bars, VEGA bars, Dale's Raw Protein, Larabar, and Elevate Me!. They are all vegan protein bars, and with the exception of Vegan Proteins + they all taste pretty good.

CLIF, Larabar, and Dale's are probably the most popular and the ones I liked best.

Not all Asian cuisines have ubiquitous meat or meat products. India has plenty of vegetarian friendly cuisine.

nations whose cuisines are highly influenced by hindu or buddhist religious reasons are exceptions, not the norm

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

I'm aware of that. Noting exceptions to refute the suggestion that "anything asian" has meat products in it is kind of the point.

The breadth of vegetarian cuisine in India is a pretty damn big exception, though.

i suspect you are That Guy that points out americans also do in fact, technically, eat small portions of vegetables sometimes, when someone complains that 'american food' is sugary and comes in oversized portions?

i know very few indian people who are strictly veg and i know a lot of them here, anyway. i also wasn't trying to imply that there is not a single chinese dish without any meat in it, since i was using what i had thought would be quite obvious hyperbole. but i don't think there's a point to arguing about hyperbole to someone who is trying to win technically-correct points, so. coo

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. A lot of American food does tend to come in large portions with a high sugar/fat/salt content, if you're judging by restaurant food. Obviously if you're talking about what people cook at home, it's different.

I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, anon. Suggesting that no Asian cuisine is vegetarian friendly was such a glaring error, it didn't seem like nitpicking on technicalities to me.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, see, it was not a glaring error, it was obvious hyperbole that was intended to be obvious hyperbole, much like the whole rest of the comment it was couched in which i'm forced to assume you chose to disregard since you haven't mentioned any of it

like, sorry you missed the hyperbole, anon? but it was there in everything else too

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
na

fwiw, i agree with you about the glaring omission of india as an asian country. sure, the bit about "FISHY SAUCES IN EVERYTHING; EVERYTHING I TELL YOU!" was obvious hyperbole, but i feel that OP got a bit ruffled about the correction regarding "asian"...

DA

I also have a hard time meeting my protein quotas since I developed a soy intolerance, but I'm mostly omnivorous, so I can load up when I really need to, if I can afford it. Do you have anything like meal replacement shakes where you are? Not the Weight Watchers or SlimFast, this stuff is sold in the pharmacy section where I am, and you can get special formulations e.g. high fibre or high protein. Parenteral nutrition, I think that's what you have to ask for. Ensure is the brand I drink, it doesn't taste too bad, though I haven't tried the high protein varieties.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
i hope i never get hit with a soy intolerance or im fucked :D

ok, not fucked but that would suck majorly. i'm sorry that happened to you :(

i never thought about the meal replacement type option, great idea, i'll have to look into it

AYRT

Basically, I had a bone infection. Even though I tried to load up on probiotics when I was sick, the industrial-strength antibiotics still did a number on my stomach. Result, I haven't been able to eat soy since, without the same kind of explosive problems/results I normally get from dairy. Let me tell you how much it sucks. I dream of tofu, anon. Toasted soybeans were my go-to snack. I MISS SOY MILK THE MOST. *sobs*

LOL, but seriously, the pharmacist-recommended meal replacement shakes are deffo the way you want to go. Ask for the high-protein variety.
