"Don't win the war til I get there." might have been overly flippant, sure, but I read it as Steve trying to boost Bucky's morale by implying that the war will be over quickly.

I certainly didn't read it as Steve wanting the war to linger on for a chance to be the hero. I don't think he was being selfish to say that. I think he was just trying to reassure his friend with a light-hearted remark.

I think Steve has flaws, but letting "his desire to be the hero or be right get in the way of helping people or relieving their suffering" isn't one of them. (Well, maybe his desire to be right. But not his desire to be the hero.)
