43. Sansa is my favourite character too. The vitriol towards her is unbelievable, which is one of the reasons I avoid the forums - along with the implication that being a fan of Sansa and Arya is impossible or something. I love that GRRM didn't go the way of having the tomboy win out and make a fool of the feminine girl, because it shows you don't have to be masculine to be strong. It's really sad this had to be a secret.

I think one of the best things about ASOIAF is the different POVs which force you to see everything from everyone's POV, which makes it difficult to make any character completely a villain or a good person. Sansa's development as a character has been pretty awesome, and I hope it continues.

[identity profile] elwing-alcyone.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's why I don't get it! I think bashing Sansa for her choices kind of misses the point that the women in Westeros just can't win. Even Catelyn, who fit the ideal almost perfectly, and had a lot of luck in her life. But instead of feeling some sympathy with the complete lack of options, people just have to find a girl character to bash. It's sadly predictable.

Sansa's development as a character has been pretty awesome, and I hope it continues.

Word! It should be interesting to see where it all goes. I'm especially curious about the disturbing way that Sansa and Arya can both step into brand new indentities and live them. It's really interesting because most of of the other characters cope by becoming more rigid and set in their ways, and basing their identity around whatever it is that stops them from fitting in - which really doesn't work. It makes me really curious to see the results Sansa and Arya's strategy.

Sorry for the rambling! Now my brain's thinking about this I could probably go on about it for pages.

[identity profile] falco-999.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree. But I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'strong'. I mean, Sansa has a sort of inner strength, yes. She's kept on going, despite - she thinks - losing her whole family. She's still on the whole a decent sort of person, certainly when compared to a lot of the people who've surrounded her.

Sandor and Petyr seem to be good for her, because they make her think - without them, she just retreats into her own world. Which is endurance, but is a passive, rather hopeless sort of endurance. She doesn't make any plans of her own. She just floats along, not analysing much, because it's easier for her to float than fall.

This does all seem rather harsh. I'm actually very fond of Sansa. But I can't really buy her as a model of feminine courage. That (for me) is Brienne. Sansa to me currently seems to be in a chrysalis stage. As she learns politics from LF, she might finally get to play a more active role in her own fate. So, passive feminine strength is a stopgap until the flowering of an active masculine strength? No.

Okay, tl;dr. I'm mostly trying to work out my own thoughts.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's a harsh interpretation of her, just accurate. And I love her, too, and I love how she's coming out of that dreamy passivity into something stronger without being corrupted. (Well, not yet. Please, GRRM, don't let that happen to her.)

I loved that moment when she thinks to herself that when she is queen, she wants people to love her. I have fantasies of her using the tricks she'll learn from Littlefinger against him to bring about his downfall and then she'll swing by the Quiet Isle and pick up the Hound so that he'll be by her side when she rules.

[identity profile] falco-999.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes - I slightly creeped myself out by shipping Sandor/Sansa from the end of GoT. When she was - what? Eleven? And I'm not even a shipping-minded person.

The redemptive arc for Sandor, the growth of Sansa's maturity and perceptiveness, the beauty/beast and warped knight/fair lady dynamics - they feel so right I worry that Martin may be planning to feed them into his plot grinder to keep the other dead characters company. Or kill off Sandor and make Sansa join the Silent Sisters. Or kill off Sansa and make a heavily-disguised Sandor join them. :P Mind you, with GRRM writing, I'll probably enjoy what happens even if it does all go utterly pear-shaped.

(Though I quite like LF. He's a creep, but I love his appearances. Ditto the late Tywin. However, ff Sansa outdoes him, you'll be hearing no complaints from this direction.)

Thanks. :) Also: ASOIAF! Squee! Sorry, overcome by a surge of affection for my beloved fantasy series.

Agh, me too! GRRM wrote for the '80s TV show "Beauty and the Beast," which didn't end happily for the titular couple, so I can't help but fear that there won't be a happy, or even satisfying, ending to whatever connection exists between Sansa and the Hound. But, dammit, GRRM, something has to work out well in your universe...

I love Littlefinger, too! He's such a delightful little weasel.

And now I have to dig out my books and read them again. I'm glad to see ASOIAF secrets popping up here...maybe I'll make my own... :)

[identity profile] falco-999.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes - do make a few ASoIaF secrets. I've been trying to think of some myself, so that RP and anime will forgotten as fs is flooded by the Starks and the Lannisters!

Littlefinger has some great lines. At times, he seems like one of the few sane characters in the series, along with Hodor, ;) at others, as with his Cat-fixation, he seems madder than a doped-up Ser Gregor.

[identity profile] sapphire-hime.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It does make me sad that GRRM admitted to Sansa being his least favorite character, however. It makes reading the books sometimes an uncomfortable experience for me.

[identity profile] elwing-alcyone.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack, he did? That is sad. When I get my books back I'll have to try rereading her chapters with that in mind.

I hope he doesn't let it affect the outcome of her story, anyway. Although considering the horrible fates of pretty much all the characters, I suppose it'd be difficult to tell.

[identity profile] sapphire-hime.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, he did. It stuck in my mind since I was contemplating how much I disliked Tyrion, and shortly after I read in the same interview how Tyrion was basically his favorite and ideal character, before adding that Sansa was the least favorite with very little tolerance of her. I still wish I hadn't read that.

[identity profile] athousandwinds.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
...Fancy meeting you here. :) I quite enjoy Tyrion's chapters, except when they deal with Tysha or Shae (so ... quite a lot of them, really). The latter because Shae bores me senseless and the former because thinking about what happened to Tysha makes me sick and I find it impossible to like Tyrion whenever he mentions her.

Sansa is probably my favourite character in the series. Because she is realistically powerless in her situation (and her surroundings are interesting enough that I don't become frustrated with her inertia) and her coping mechanisms are fascinating.
