#36 - I agree, there are a lot of kickass female characetrs out there :]

But... for every awesome female character, it's like there are three useless ones :( But then again, there are plenty of useless male characters as well. It's just easier to attack girls because it's easier to be jealous of them/stereotype all girls as emotional and whiny.

#57 - I remember in the book when Elphaba kissed Glinda.

I could never watch the musical based on how I've heard people talk about it, like you.

57. Yeah... That's not even as OOC as it gets. But then, I'm a little too anal about the book to ever give the musical a second chance. What killed it for me was how they absolutely butchered Fiyero's character in the musical; they should have just made a completely new character to be him. Seriously, THAT wouldn't have grated me as bad as the character rape committed against him in the musical.

I know I'm going to get lectured for this again by a musical fan... but I just can't stand the musical.

57. As a fan of both the book and the musical, I try and view them as different stories with different characters. Of course, I saw the musical first, so it was probably easier for me to get used to a darker version of the happy fun sparkly musical than the other way around. (And really, Musical!Fiyero was better suited to Galinda ANYWAY. I spent the whole show wondering why Elphaba was interested in him. Then I read the book and realized, "Oh, that's not really Fiyero!")

But I'm not going to lecture you on not liking the musical, Wicked is HARDLY the most brilliant musical ever, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. (That and I totally understand loving a book/play/musical and being unhappy with an adaptation. Look at all the Broadway fans being all foamy at the Sweeney Todd movie!)

See, I had heard nonstop about the musical through my high school drama class years ago and saw the book at Waldenbooks and bought it. I ended up really loving it and was even more interested in the musical than ever because I had really wanted to see these characters in action... I think I've just never gotten past the disappointment in seeing them as more loose adaptations than live action counterparts (though Elphie was pretty close, from what I can remember). My reaction to the musical, naturally, was opposite of the musical fans' reaction to the book; I was shocked that it was so much brighter and pop-ish and barely political.

Most of the time I can like a book version of something and a movie version of something (liek Lord of the Rings and I guess if we want to get into more extreme adaptations that are viewed as seperate entities, Hellblazer/Constantine, which are dramatically different), but I never could get past that with Wicked. I think that may also be because I've never really been too fond of actual musicals, though.
